Hobbit Question 4 March 29, 2011

If Thorin could have lived, do you think he would have regretted his greed? What do you think Tolkien is trying to teach us about material wealth by Thorin's death? In your response, site textual evidence to support your response. Use page numbers too.

Michael Walton
Reading-6

Thorin was greedy because he felt that he was a king so he should keep it all. I think that if Thorin Oakensheild were to live he definitely would have been a lot less greedy towards all of that gold. I also think that Tolkien is trying to teach us that if we are greedy toward personal materials you won't prosper, so he is really trying to tell us we shouldn't be greedy. I know this because Thorin says wisely to Bilbo, "There is more good in you than you know. (Page 312)".
~Your citation does not support whether or not Thorin had changed his mind about all his treasures or the Arkenstone. This does show he is sorry for treating Bilbo badly. ~ Mrs. Best

Hobbit Question 3
March 20, 2011

When Gandolf first visits Bilbo, looking for someone to share in an adventure, Bilbo tells Gandalf that hobbits are

"...plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can't think what anybody sees in them "(7).

The dwarves are not quite sure that Bilbo will be able to handle the adventures at all, and Bilbo himself wonders how he found himself at The Green Dragon Inn, riding a pony away from Hobbiton. But now, Bilbo has become the unspoken leader of the party. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would never have made it to Lonely Mountain.

Is an adventure something that happens to us or how we react to what happens? Often in life, adventures are not as obvious as killing giant spiders or escaping from an Elven king's dungeon. Sometimes adventures are made out of ordinary days and ordinary events, with ordinary people who become the heroes. You may not even realize you've been in an adventure until after it's over!

Think about the times you have learned a new skill, moved, changed schools, competed in sports, welcomed a new pet, discovered a new friend, performed in front of an audience, or had a terrifying fall. These events are adventures in process. Have you grown or changed from your experience with any of these situations, as Bilbo grew and changed
because of his adventure with the dwarves? Recall a time when something happened to cause you to grow and change in a positive way. Respond on your wiki page.

I think that an adventure is something that happens to us and how we react to that situation. I think so because sometimes you can be in an adventure and you might not take that in so that you have experience in different situations because you are lazy, while sometimes you could be in a great adventure and take that all in and learn a lot just from that one simple situation. I love being in adventures! I have been in so
many different adventures, and if I tried to keep a count of how many adventures I have been in "WOW" would I be tired. Adventures can happen any time and we probably don't even know how good of an experience an adventure can be until after the experience is over. One adventure that I had was getting a new puppy named Lola. Lola would always chase me around, and when she would catch me she would want me to play tug-a-war. This was a great adventure for my family and I because we learned to play with pets, we learned to take more responsibility, like walking, feeding, and playing with the dog, and we learned to not be afraid of dogs anymore. Bilbo has grew in many ways because of this this adventure. One way was that he was able to steal the ring from Gollum the goblin. Bilbo is really learning to be a good burglar. ~ Do you think that is the only way Bilbo changes during the book? What about his confidence? What about the importance of friends? I think your puppy, Lola, would definitely be an adventure!! ~Mrs. Best

Choose one conflict in The Hobbit, and explain how Tolkien uses it to move the story forward. Don't forget to cite page number when appropriate.

Michael Walton
Reading-6
One conflict in "The Hobbit" is a character to character
conflict. The character to character conflict is between
Bilbo Baggins and Gollum. The two characters get into
a riddle war. Tolkien uses it to move the story forward
by being able to get Bilbo out of the cave.

~Way too brief, Michael. Mrs. Best

Good Job Michael!

I think it was good that you stated what kind of conflict it was. I think it was kind of funny when Bilbo and Gollum got in a riddle-war. I really liked this conflict because it made me really excited to read the next chapter to see what happened to Bilbo and if he found his friends. I really agree that this was a good conflict that moves the story forward. The conflict that I told about was whether or not if Bilbo should Join the dwarves and Gandalf on their adventure to regain their stolen treasure.
Evan Hussey Great comments! I love the way you share thoughts and do not feel you need to critique Michael's Mrs. Best

Hobbit Question 2
March 4, 2011
In your own words, describe what happens next to Bilbo and the dwarves in the forest.Hobbit Question 2

Michael Walton
Reading-6

What happens next to Bilbo Baggins, the dwarves, and Gandolf
is a huge slew of difficulties for the entire gang. Bilbo and the
dwarves want to get a good night sleep. But they don't! Were
try to sleep they here a loud howling noise. This really frightened
them, therefore, they rushed into the trees. When the group sees
what it was they thought it was just some wolves. But it wasn't! The
wild animals were a pack of Wargs, which are friends to the goblins.
Everyone feels trapped in the trees, but eagles comes down from
their nest to help the travelers because The Lord of the Eagles
is a friend with Gandolf. The eagles let them rest and have food
and water with them. ~ Way too brief. This doesn't tell me why they are trapped in the trees. Please go to some of the other student responses to see what I was looking for. This will help with future assignments. Try Nikki, Thomas D, Coco, Allison R. ~Mrs. Best
